Metafield Manager

A demonstrable Shopify Admin application for managing consistent product metafields from one item to thousands, with preview and audit history.

The business problem

Shopify’s standard administration handles metafield work one product and one field at a time. That becomes impractical when a catalog needs consistent structured data across many products and the operator also needs to see what changed.

What DSWD delivered

DSWD built an embedded application for browsing catalog metafields through reusable field sets, editing individual products with live preview, and applying mapped values across larger product sets through a guided workflow.

The operator experience

An operator selects the fields that matter, filters the catalog, edits one product or starts a bulk workflow, reviews the mapped values, previews the effect, and confirms. Change history remains available for audit.

Safeguards and operating qualities

  • The bulk workflow separates selection, mapping, preview, and confirmation.
  • Execution changes automatically between direct and asynchronous modes based on batch size.
  • Audit records keep timestamps and outcomes visible.
  • Reusable field sets reduce inconsistency across repeated work.
  • Live preview helps the operator inspect rendered values before a broader change.

Project-specific technical choices

For this project, we used a Shopify-native administrative experience with durable application records because the work needed to remain familiar to merchants while supporting repeatable field definitions, scale-aware execution, and a traceable history.

Evidence and claim boundary

The application is fully functional and demonstrable on demand against a development store. Client rollout is pending, so DSWD does not describe it as production or client-live work.
